Leavenworth, Washington
A missed ferry between two national parks — and the accidental stop we'll never stop talking about
Travel · Road trip · Pacific Northwest · June
My husband and I were in the middle of a big Pacific Northwest national parks road trip — fresh off a stay at Olympic National Park and headed to North Cascades — when a missed ferry changed everything. In the best possible way.
Olympic NP → Ferry... nope → Leavenworth ✦ → North Cascades NP
If you’ve ever wanted to feel like you stepped into a European mountain village without leaving the U.S., Leavenworth, Washington is it.
But here’s the thing—most people visit and miss the best parts completely.
This guide will show you exactly what to do (and what to skip) so you don’t waste your trip.
HOW IT HAPPENED
We'd heard of Leavenworth but decided it was a little too far out of the way — so we planned to take a ferry instead. Except when we showed up, the next one wasn't until 5pm. It was 9am. With no good way to wait it out, the only real option was to drive down and around. That route took us right past Leavenworth. What felt like an eight-hour inconvenience turned into the highlight of the whole trip.

The drive alone stopped us in our tracks
Even before we reached the town, the road had already made an impression. It was June, and the hillsides were covered in apple and cherry trees in full bloom — endless rows of them climbing up the mountain slopes, broken up by cold mountain streams winding through the valleys below. It's the kind of scenery that makes you reach over and tap your travel partner on the arm just to make sure they're seeing what you're seeing. I won't forget it.
What the town is like
Leavenworth sits along the Wenatchee River at the base of the Cascades and looks like nowhere else in Washington. Back in the 1960s the town reinvented itself as a Bavarian village — flower boxes, half-timbered buildings, cobblestone-style streets — and it genuinely works. It doesn't feel like a theme park. It feels like a town that found its identity and leaned all the way in.
We hit it on a perfect June day — busy enough to feel alive, but not so packed that it was overwhelming. We wandered through a few shops along Front Street, found a spot outside, and did exactly what you're supposed to do in a Bavarian village: ordered brats and cold beers and just enjoyed being somewhere we never planned to be.
YOU DON’T NEED A FULL DAY
We were just passing through and had a genuinely great time in a few hours. Leavenworth works perfectly as a road trip stop — walk the main street, grab food, take it all in. No overnight stay required.
Make it stand out
Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
If you're planning to stop
GETTING THERE
~2.5 hrs from Seattle via US-2 through Stevens Pass. The drive through the orchards is stunning in June.
BEST IN JUNE
Apple and cherry trees are blooming along the mountain roads on the approach. Don't rush the drive.
TIME NEEDED
2–4 hours is plenty for a casual stop. Fits easily into an Olympic → North Cascades road trip.
CROWDS
June weekdays are manageable. Oktoberfest and Christmas Lighting are the busiest times of year.
The bottom line
We were on our way from one spectacular national park to another — and somehow, a town we'd almost skipped managed to hold its own. That's saying something. Leavenworth is charming without trying too hard, beautiful without being fussy, and easy to love even on a short visit.
We're already talking about going back. Next time, we're actually staying the night.
